Nurturing Love: The Dynamics of Disability Relationships

Relationships are the cornerstone of human connection, offering love, companionship, and support.
For individuals with disabilities, navigating relationships can present unique challenges and opportunities, shaping the dynamics of love and intimacy in profound ways.
Let’s explore the complexities and beauty of disability relationships.

Building Trust and Understanding

At the core of any successful relationship is trust and understanding. This foundation is often strengthened through open communication and empathy. Partners may need to navigate physical and emotional challenges together, requiring patience, compassion, and a willingness to adapt.

Redefining Intimacy

Intimacy takes many forms, beyond physical closeness. In disability relationships, intimacy may involve emotional connection, shared experiences, and mutual respect. Partners often find creative ways to express their love and affection, focusing on emotional intimacy as a cornerstone of their relationship.

Overcoming Challenges

Relationships can face unique challenges, including societal stigma, accessibility barriers, and medical complexities. However, these challenges can also be opportunities for growth and resilience, as partners work together to find solutions and support each other’s needs.

Celebrating Differences

Every relationship is unique, shaped by the personalities, interests, and experiences of the individuals involved.
Relationships celebrate these differences, embracing the diversity of human experiences and challenging stereotypes and misconceptions.

Cultivating Support Networks

Support networks play a crucial role in disability relationships, providing emotional support, practical assistance, and a sense of community. Friends, family, and support groups can offer valuable resources and understanding, strengthening the bond between partners.
Relationships are a testament to the power of love and resilience in overcoming challenges. By fostering trust, embracing intimacy, and celebrating differences, partners in relationships create meaningful and fulfilling connections that inspire us all.
Whether you are in a relationship with a person with disability, supporting a loved one, or simply curious about these dynamics, remember that love knows no bounds, and with understanding and empathy, we can all nurture and cherish the relationships that enrich our lives.

Much love,

The Cliq Connection Team

Navigating Disability Dating in Australia

Dating can be a complex and often daunting experience for anyone, but for those with disabilities, there can be unique challenges to navigate. In Australia, there is a growing recognition of the importance of inclusivity in dating, with more resources and platforms becoming available to support disabled individuals in finding meaningful connections.

Let’s explore some of the key aspects of disability dating in Australia.

Accessible Dating Platforms

One of the major challenges for people with disabilities in the dating world is finding platforms that are accessible and inclusive. Fortunately, there The Cliq Connection is here to address some of those challenges and assist in making online dating accessible.

Social Stigma and Misconceptions

Despite progress in promoting inclusivity, there are still societal stigmas and misconceptions surrounding disability and dating. Many people with disabilities report feeling misunderstood or overlooked in the dating scene, facing assumptions about their capabilities or desirability.
Education and awareness campaigns are crucial in challenging these misconceptions and promoting a more inclusive dating culture.

Support and Resources

In Australia, there are various organizations and support groups dedicated to helping people with disabilities navigate the dating world, our sister company, First Step Solutions is pioneering the educational front on safe and healthy relationships, including online connections with The Date-Ability Program, specifically developed by Allied Health Professionals for people with disability.
These resources offer guidance on building confidence, understanding rights and boundaries, and developing healthy relationships.
Additionally, First Step Solutions also host events and social gatherings specifically for people with disability to meet and connect in a safe and supportive environment.

Legal Rights and Protections

It’s important for individuals with disabilities to be aware of their legal rights and protections in the dating realm.
In Australia, the Disability Discrimination Act of 1992 prohibits discrimination based on disability in areas including employment, education, and access to goods and services. This legislation helps ensure that disabled individuals have equal opportunities in dating and relationships.

Navigating the world of disability dating in Australia comes with its challenges, but it’s also a realm full of opportunities for meaningful connections and relationships.
With the right support, resources, and a shift in societal attitudes, disabled individuals can find fulfilling and inclusive dating experiences in Australia.
If you’re interested in disability dating in Australia, remember to explore accessible platforms like The Cliq Connection, seek out supportive communities, and advocate for inclusivity in all aspects of life, including dating.

Much love,

Ever heard the saying, ‘Questions are the keys that unlock doors’?

Well, buckle in Cliqers, because we’re about to dive into the world of questions, helping to give you the confidence you’ll need for your first date/s or meet-ups.

Just like peeling layers off an onion, the right questions help you to unravel the unique qualities that make up a person.

Without further ado, let’s talk about the art of asking questions that help set the stage for amazing connections.

So, you’ve taken the plunge and started a conversation on Cliq – kudos to you!

Now, what’s the next step to ensure those early interactions become the building blocks of something special?

It’s all about asking the right questions. But what’s the right questions to ask? Well, you can start with the basics about family, friends, work, life etc, remembering that there’s no right or wrong, as it’s always better to ask more questions and show you’re interested rather than talking about yourself the whole time! But once you’ve worked your way through those questions, here’s a few other pointers to mix things up and get the conversation flowing!

  1. The Icebreaker: Start with a bang! Ask about their go-to ice cream flavour, favourite childhood cartoon, or the last song that made them dance. It’s all about breaking the ice and discovering the fun quirks that make each of us unique.

  1. Passions and Pursuits: Dive into their world of interests. What hobbies light up their days? Whether it’s painting, stargazing, or collecting vintage stamps, understanding a person’s passions can reveal shared interests and ignite engaging conversations.

  1. Travel stories: Dream destinations, bucket list adventures – everyone has them! Discover the wanderlust within and share your travel dreams. Who knows, your next connection might be a fellow explorer with a passion for the same hidden gems.

  1. For the foodies: Bonding over food is a universal joy. Ask about their favourite comfort meal, the weirdest thing they’ve ever eaten, or the cuisine they’re dying to try. Food connects us all, and discovering food likes and dislikes can be the gateway to delicious connections.

  1. Bookworms: Books are portals to different worlds. Ask about the last book that stole their heart or the one they’ve been itching to read. Discussions about books also open the door to new recommendations.

  1. Movie Magic: Everyone loves a good movie. Inquire about their all-time favourite film or the last movie that made them laugh or cry. It’s a great way to gauge their sense of humour and emotional depth.

  1. Life’s Joys: Find out about the small things that bring them joy – a favourite childhood memory, a cherished tradition, or the simple pleasures that light up their day. These details can create a foundation for shared happiness.

  1. Goals and Ambitions: Envisioning the future together can be exciting. Ask about their short-term goals and long-term aspirations. Understanding each other’s dreams helps pave the way for mutual support and encouragement.

  1. The Laughter Test: End on a light note! Ask about the last thing that made them laugh uncontrollably. Sharing funny stories sets a positive tone and ensures that your Cliq conversation feels fun from the get-go.

Remember, Cliq Connection is all about authentic interactions and finding the people that will one day make up your ‘clique’

These questions are just the beginning – let the conversation flow and enjoy discovering the distinct story that makes each connection special.

Good luck asking those weird and wonderful questions, and we look forward to hearing how it all goes!

Hey Cliq Community,

Rejection…

The word alone is enough to leave a sinking feeling in our stomachs. The fear of rejection is quite literally enough to stop us in our tracks.

It’s that unwelcome visitor we never invited but somehow managed to find its way into our lives. But, rest assured, we get it. The journey to building meaningful connections isn’t always a smooth ride, and bumps along the way are inevitable.

So, first things first, let’s get one thing clear – rejection is NOT a reflection of you.

Read that again, rejection is NOT a reflection of you.

It is nothing more than a detour, or a fork in the road that guides you toward a different path.

So, how do you go head-to-head with this goliath of emotions without losing your Cliq mojo?

Well, we are in your corner with our top tips and learned experiences to help!

  1. Own Your Uniqueness:
Remember, you should be unapologetically YOU.
Rejection doesn’t lessen your worth. It’s simply an opportunity for you to shine even brighter. Your quirks and your personality – that’s the real gold.  And often, rejection is simply that you’re not ‘their’ person, but you most definitely will be someone else’s. We’re all unique with unique tastes and preferences, so don’t let one person’s choice of friend or partner make you feel like there isn’t that special someone out there for you.
Embrace it, flaunt it, and let your light attract the right connections.
  2. Learn and Grow:
Rejection is a teacher, not a punisher.
You should take a moment to reflect on the experience.
What did you learn? What can you improve? Growth comes from embracing challenges, and rejection is just another step in your journey to becoming the very best version of yourself.

  3. Celebrate Your Courage:
Putting yourself out there takes guts. So be proud of yourself.
Whether it’s sending that first message or sharing a piece of your world, celebrate the fact that you overcame your fears and were a brave Cliq-er. We’re proud of you!!Rejection is not a sign of weakness but a testament to your bravery. Keep that Cliq spirit alive, and remember, you’re one step closer to finding the connections that truly resonate with you.

  4. Connect with Your Cliq Community
Share your experiences with your fellow Cliq members.
We’ve all been there, and you should have comfort that we have all experienced this in some way or another.

Your Cliq community is your support system, cheering you on and here to remind you that rejection is just a stepping stone to the connections waiting around the corner.

So, the moral of the story is, you should be embracing rejection as a guidepost, not a roadblock.

Your story is unique, and every rejection is a nudge toward something even more incredible.

Stay true to yourself, learn, grow, and remember, your Cliq journey is about finding those who appreciate you for the amazing individual that you are.

Here’s to navigating life’s twists and turns with confidence and resilience. You’ve got this!

Much love,

How To – Take A Selfie 101

It’s true what they say, “a picture is worth a
thousand words!”
Especially when it comes to social media.

How do you make sure you’ve captured a “selfie” of you that’s also a reflection of your
personality & ‘vibe’?
We’ve got you covered with some of our best hints and tips to putting your best
Cliq face forward.

-Make sure your profile picture is quite obviously your face.

This may seem pretty straight forward, however this means just YOUR face, we
want the focus to be on you.
Not you and your besties or your aunty or even your sibling.
Just YOUR glorious face.
Too many filters can also have a negative result on your profile photo, just be
you!
Having a profile photo which is easily identified as “you photo” will also
assist with our mandatory verification process!

You can include a photo with you and your friends and family in
your “gallery” just not your profile photo!

-Where is the best spot to take a selfie?!

Have a walk around your house, or wherever you are, with your phone screen
facing you and open up the “camera” app.
Make sure you can see yourself in the screen as you’re walking around.
You’re looking for that “sweet” spot of lighting that
really makes your face POP.
Another thing to consider when finding that perfect spot, stay away from busy
backgrounds. Wanting to have an awesome scenic background is absolutely A-OK;
Just reduce objects/people being in your awesome scenery.

-What do I do with my face or my body?

Look natural! You do you.
Remember that whilst your profile photo should be clear, this isn’t a catwalk,
so relax; Natural poses and facial expressions is where it’s at.
Practice some different angles to find where you feel you look most comfortable
and that brings out your best features.
Some angles you can try- Tilt the camera to the side or hold your phone
slightly higher and point it down towards your face.
Think about something that made you happy or smile. Capture that beautiful
moment!

Quick tips

– Avoid screen flash!
-Set your phone up on a tripod or lean it against something, set the phones
timer and take a photo that way.
-Angles are your friend!

There you go! How to take a Selfie 101- bringing you closer to your Cliq!

How To – Break Up With Someone (friend or relationship)

Hi Cliq fam, we’ve been thinking about YOU.

Relationships and friendships are so exciting in the beginning. Everything is new and fun! The other person feels the same excitement as you, and it is not uncommon for this fun time to overpower everything else in your life.

Unfortunately, new and fun doesn’t always last, and you may drift apart or learn more about each other that perhaps you don’t like.

There are many reasons people break up. Moving away, drifting apart, changing feelings are just a few of the reasons.

Despite the reasons behind your decision, we are here for you. Breaking up can be uncomfortable, a bit yucky, and sometimes it is just downright awful.  We are here to help- ALWAYS.YOU are a beautiful, unique and special person, who deserves nothing but the best. We are serious when we say we want you to be happy and authentically you, in both your friendships and your relationships.

We know that breaking up is a hard time, so the team at Cliq Connection HQ have come up with some things to think about, as well as some tips to make your breakup as painless as possible.

BEFORE | Can you work it out?

Breaking up doesn’t have to be the only option when a friendship or relationship isn’t working. Maybe you had an argument or fight about something. This doesn’t mean you need to break up.

This is a wonderful opportunity to let the other person know how you are feeling, and maybe find a solution to prevent you from breaking up.

Start by letting them know that you are unhappy and ask to meet them to talk about it. Chances are, they don’t want to break up with you and will want to work through whatever is bothering you. Talking about your feelings is an important part of all relationships.  If you can work through this ‘speed bump’, it might make you better friends or a stronger couple moving forward.

DURING | When you can’t work it out

Remember when we said we want you to be happy and authentically you? Well, it is all true! You deserve nothing more than to be loved for who you are.  If that isn’t the case in a friendship or relationship, maybe breaking up is the best option.

It is really important to be caring and respectful towards the other person, because while it is hard for you, they most likely aren’t going to be happy about the decision either. Remember to treat people with respect and how you would want to be treated.

The best thing to do is to be clear and straightforward about breaking up. Taking time to think about what YOU want and why can help make you feel more confident in your decision. It is important to know that while the other person might be hurt by your decision, you are allowed to do what is right for YOU.

You might like to write down what you will say first, so you don’t forget. A few ways to start the conversation are;

·       There’s no easy way to do this, but I need to end this relationship/friendship…

·       I know this will hurt you, and maybe as much as me, but I don’t want to be friends anymore…

Following on from this, you can explain why. Giving reasons is a really good way to explain your feelings, especially if you are experiencing a lot! Again, you can write down what you want to say.  Some examples of how to give reasons could start with;

·       It upset me when you…

·       It hurt me when you…

·       I don’t like it when you…

Remember the other person will likely be hurt that you want to break up with them. This may mean they try to get you not to break up with them by begging, getting angry or getting upset (crying). It is normal for you to feel angry, sad, guilty, anxious, stressed or overwhelmed yourself, but it is important to be strong and stick to YOUR decision. Most importantly, if you feel unsafe at any stage, you can leave.

Be sure to take your listening ears because, while you are breaking up with them, they may have something to say, even if they are unhappy or angry about your decision.

AFTER | Look after yourself and get support

Ok, so you’ve done it. You’ve broken up with your friend or romantic partner. Firstly, we are proud of you! It is not an easy thing to do, and no matter how many times you may break up, it doesn’t get any easier.

Now is the time to look after YOU, and a time to learn. You might be feeling a bit of relief which is totally normal! The first thing to do is to let your family and close friends know about your breakup. This way they can support you, particularly on days when you might feel lonely. It is ok to ask for help especially if you really aren’t feeling like your usual self.

Revisit some of your favourite things to do, listening to music, seeing friends, getting crafty, or going to the beach. Believe it or not, this is an amazing time for self-growth and learning more about yourself.

Breakups can teach us a lot about ourselves, and help us to build skills like honesty, resilience, and kindness, especially in difficult conversations. They can also strengthen our friendships, when we rely on our friends in times of hardship. Remember that your feelings are valid, and you deserve love and respect to live your most authentic life.

And remember, if you need any help or have any questions, you can reach out to our team by emailing hello@thecliqconnection.com.au or sending a message to our Facebook page.

Hey Cliq Fam!

How are you doing on this amazing day? We hope you’re smiling like we are!

We have been receiving lots of messages from YOU asking why we need your NDIS number for you to sign up for the Cliq Connection app, and do you know what? That is a great question! Let us explain why we need it.

When Cheryl Drury, our amazing founder, decided to create a dating and friendship app for NDIS participants, there were a few non-negotiables for our app. We wanted it to be;

  • An exclusive place for people with disabilities to connect online,
  • A place where people can be authentically themselves
  • An online space where safety is our top priority, so you know people are who they say who they are (no CatLady25 as Cheryl would say!)

The reason for these inclusions is because traditional friendship and dating platforms do not have regulations around identity and inclusivity. A few of Cheryl’s Financial Literacy clients spoke about meeting people online and being scammed out of money, and when trying to recover the money, it became obvious that those people had been using fake names because they couldn’t be found.

The Cliq Connection was born out of an opportunity to create a safe place exclusively for NDIS participants to connect.

So, how can we be sure people are who they say they are?

Simple: we ask for their NDIS number when they register and check it against their profile.

By including your NDIS number as part of the sign-up process, we can confirm;

  • You are who you say you are by checking your Cliq Connection profile against your NDIS profile
  • You are in Australia (because NDIS is only in Australia)

We know it might seem like a lot of information to sign up for a dating and friendship app, but our top priority is to keep YOU, as our Cliq, completely safe online. You can also be sure that we will never sell your information to a third party, as user privacy is also essential to us when we talk about safety.

Hopefully this answers your question as to why we need your NDIS number, but remember, if you need any help or have any questions, you can reach out to our team by emailing hello@thecliqconnection.com.au or sending a message to our Facebook page.

Well, this is a bit exciting isn’t it! You’ve not only made a connection (go YOU!), you’re also going to meet in person. LOOK AT YOU GO!

The whole team at The Cliq Connection are cheering for YOU!

We know it sounds scary meeting in person, but just remember;

YOU ARE WORTHY – YOU ARE AWESOME – YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!

To help take some of the stress out of what to do or where to go for your first date, we have made a list of our top 10 first date ideas to give you some help.

Read on!

1. Grab a coffee

If you don’t have to have lots of time, a quick coffee date could be a great way to start! Even just 30 minutes is plenty of time to grab a coffee or milkshake together!

2. Get some food

There is a reason that a dinner date (or breakfast, lunch, or dessert!), is a popular choice for a first dateit is an easy way to find common ground by sharing your favourite food. And everyone has to eat right?! Maybe you really like pasta and they love pizza- hey, you both love Italian food! That sounds like a connection to us!

3. Go for a walk

There are plenty of first dates that don’t cost any money at all- like going for a walk in your local park. You can casually stroll around the park, find a seat to talk, or smell flowers and notice the wildlife.

4. Watch a movie

This could be at the cinema or at your house, but it is a nice way to see how you feel when you are with them. Do you feel comfortable or do you want to leave?

5. Visit the zoo

One of our favourite animals at Cliq Connection are flamingos! They are so cool! Going to the zoo together would be a great way to show your date your favourite animals and learn about other animals.

6. Enjoy sports

So, you both love AFL (duh!), you could go and watch your home team play (at the stadium or on telly) or what about a tour of your local stadium? I bet they have lots of fun facts to learn!

7. It’s game time!

Don’t let a rainy day get you down, dig out your board games and get competitive! Whether it is monopoly, hungry hippos or uno, there are plenty of games to keep you occupied and entertained.

8. Get arty

Have you been to your local art gallery? There are so many talented people in your area, go and support them together. You can become an art critic for an afternoon and pick your favourite painting or sculpture.

9. Listen to music

Wait a minute? You both like Keith Urban? No, hang on, it was Dua Lipa wasn’t it? Well, whoever you like to listen to, share your music tastes with your date. Better still, if your favourite band or musician are in town, go and see them live.

10. Cyber date

Maybe meeting in person feels too much to get started. And that is totally ok! Thankfully, we have incredible technology like Skype and Zoom that make meeting stress free. You can still share some of your favourite things, just virtually.

Hopefully you have a few ideas from our list about where to go, or what to do on your first date. And a lot of these ‘date’ ideas can still be used even if you’re only meeting a friend- we go out for lunch with our friends all the time!

Good luck (not that you will need it)! Remember how awesome and unique you are, and whether it leads to a second date or not, just enjoy the ride.

Well, hello there!

If you’ve landed on this page, it means you have hopefully signed-up to join our INCREDIBLE online
community, exclusively for NDIS participants, and maybe you need some help setting up your profile.

You’ve come to the right place, so let’s get started!

And remember, this is meant to be fun, so relax and enjoy the process!

Step 1. Your awesome profile picture.

Your profile is meant to be uniquely, unapologetically YOU! You don’t need to pretend; you don’t need
to make things up- just be yourself.

Let’s start with your profile picture:

   – Upload a picture of yourself that is recent, clear, and FUN!
   – Don’t have a picture you like? Take one right now! (We have put together a guide for the
PERFECT profile picture in case you need some extra tips, click here .
   – Once you are happy with your profile image, click ‘I’m Happy With This’. Yay, you’re well on your
way to an AWESOME profile! This will save your profile picture, but you can change it again later
if you want, plus there is a gallery so you can have HEAPS of great images of yourself.

Step 2. What are YOUR interests.

Let’s tell people some of the things that YOU like. Not your mum, not your dad, not your friends – YOU.
Being honest will help you connect with others that like the same things. How cool right!
Over the next few screens, select from the list one or two options from each category, and remember,
like your profile picture, you can change or add to this list later on.

Step 3. Your Cliq Mode.

It is time to choose your ‘Cliq Mode’. But what does that mean you ask?
Your Cliq mode indicates what you are looking for in the Cliq Connection app. Are you looking for
Friendship or Dating? It is important to remember that friendships can sometimes develop into
relationships and wanting to date can be a slow process; you might make great friends first!
Select which mode you would like, and in the next screen select the age range, the distance and who
you are interested in. This helps us match you to YOUR best Cliqs!

Ok, the hard work is done – HI-5! Now is the time to review your profile and connect with people- THE
BEST BIT!

Other things to remember:
The Cliq Connection app has been designed to be user friendly for EVERYONE! You will have the option
to customise your experience with the app. You can do this by clicking the stick figure in a circle icon, on
the right in the menu bar. This includes font size, letter spacing, line height, high contrast, high
saturation and monochromatic mode.

Click the person icon in the left of the menu bar to manage your profile picture, interests and more.
We wish you luck on this exciting journey, although we know you won’t need it…

YOU ARE AWESOME
YOU ARE WORTHY
YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL.
